Ask ten BMW owners for the most reliable BMW engine and you may get ten different answers. Part of the problem is that reliability discussions often mix engines from different eras, usage patterns and vehicle classes.
A more useful question is: which BMW engine families provide strong starting points for a used-car search, and what can still go wrong?
1. BMW B58 — modern petrol six-cylinder starting point
The B58 deserves a place near the top of a modern used-BMW shortlist because it combines smooth six-cylinder performance with a mature modern engine architecture.

2. BMW B48 — sensible modern petrol four-cylinder
The B48 is arguably more relevant to ordinary buyers because it appears in so many models and offers strong performance without the price premium of a six-cylinder.
It is a particularly logical starting point in 320i, 330i and related modern petrol applications.

3. BMW B47 — when diesel usage makes sense
The B47 can be an excellent long-distance engine. The major qualification is that modern diesel reliability cannot be separated from DPF, EGR and SCR systems.
A driver doing regular motorway mileage is a much better match for this engine than someone making repeated five-minute urban trips.
4. BMW N55 — strong older performance option
The N55 remains relevant because cars using it have become significantly cheaper than newer B58 equivalents. Age-related leaks, cooling components and modification history deserve attention.

5. BMW N57 — excellent when maintained and used correctly
The six-cylinder N57 diesel combines torque and refinement particularly well. Higher-output variants can be mechanically complex, so exact version and turbo configuration matter.

What about BMW M engines?
S55 and S58 engines can be extremely robust performance engines when maintained properly, but calling them the most reliable in ordinary ownership ignores their operating environment. These cars are more likely to be tuned, tracked and driven under high load.

What about N47?
N47-powered cars can still be good purchases, but timing-chain history deserves enough attention that we would not put an unknown-history N47 at the top of a low-risk shortlist.

Best BMW diesel engine?
There is no useful answer without knowing the driver's usage. A B47 in a motorway car can be an excellent fit, while an equivalent diesel used only for short trips may be a poor choice.

The engine cannot save a neglected BMW
