Is the BMW B48 reliable?

Inspect coolant hoses, reservoir areas and visible connections for dried residue. Ask whether coolant has required topping up between services.

A four-cylinder engine naturally behaves differently from a six-cylinder. Excessive vibration at idle should still be investigated because worn mounts or engine-management faults can make the car feel much rougher than normal.

5. Turbo and boost system

Acceleration should be linear and repeatable. Hesitation, boost faults, unusual whistling or drivetrain messages deserve diagnosis.

6. Tuning

B48 engines are commonly remapped. Ask directly about ECU software and aftermarket parts. A stock-looking car can still contain non-standard software.

A B58-powered BMW will generally provide more power and the character of an inline-six. That does not mean it is automatically the smarter purchase.
