The phrase BMW models to avoid sounds useful, but buying by blacklist alone is a mistake. The same BMW chassis can contain several completely different engines, and later revisions of an engine can behave differently from early versions.
A more useful approach is to identify BMW combinations where the potential repair bill is large enough that you should demand exceptional history and inspection results.
1. Early N63 V8 applications
Early versions of BMW's twin-turbo N63 V8 deserve careful research. These engines appeared in several luxury sedans and SUVs. Heat management, oil consumption, cooling hardware and expensive engine work can turn an apparently cheap V8 BMW into an expensive project.
2. Earlier N47 diesel applications
Some earlier N47 four-cylinder diesel applications became associated with timing-chain concerns. When inspecting one, identify the exact production date and engine variant rather than assuming every BMW diesel is identical.
3. N54-powered cars with unknown history
The N54 helped create BMW's modern turbo-performance reputation and has enormous tuning potential. That popularity also means many cars were modified. Injectors, high-pressure fuel hardware, turbo-related issues and undocumented tuning deserve attention.
4. Cheap flagship 7 Series
Large luxury BMWs can depreciate dramatically while retaining flagship repair costs. A bargain 7 Series may contain complex suspension, comfort electronics, large brakes and expensive drivetrain hardware.
5. Cheap V8 X5 and X6 examples
A heavily depreciated luxury SUV can be tempting. Before buying, price the tyres, brakes, suspension repairs and potential V8 work. The purchase price is often the cheapest part of ownership.
6. Diesel BMWs used exclusively for short trips
Modern diesel emissions systems prefer sustained operating temperature. A low-mileage diesel used exclusively on short cold journeys can be less attractive than a higher-mileage motorway car.
7. Cars with DPF or EGR deletes
Removing emissions equipment is not the same as repairing a fault. Depending on jurisdiction, modified emissions hardware can create inspection, registration and resale problems.
8. Heavily tuned B58 or B48 cars without records
B58 and B48 engines are desirable, which makes them popular tuning platforms. A tune is not automatically a problem. A tune that nobody can explain is.
9. xDrive BMWs on mismatched tyres
Check tyre dimensions, brand, model and remaining tread. Major differences in rolling circumference are undesirable on all-wheel-drive cars.
10. Any BMW with a suspiciously clean engine bay and no history
A freshly washed engine immediately before sale can make leaks harder to identify. Combined with missing invoices and recently cleared faults, it is a reason for additional inspection.

How to buy a higher-risk BMW properly
Identify the exact engine code, chassis code and production date. Perform a cold start. Scan every control module. Inspect the vehicle on a lift and use a BMW specialist when the drivetrain is particularly complex.
