BMW Model Numbers Explained: 20i, 30i, 40i, xDrive, d, e and M Badges

BMW Model Numbers Explained: 20i, 30i, 40i, xDrive, d, e and M Badges

A modern BMW badge tells you several things at once, but engine displacement is no longer one of the reliable shortcuts. A 330i does not necessarily have a 3.0-litre engine, and a 540i does not mean a 4.0-litre engine.

First number: BMW family

In 330i, the first number identifies the 3 Series. In 530i, the first number identifies the 5 Series.

20i, 30i and 40i

The remaining numbers now work mainly as a performance hierarchy. Within the same model family, a 40i is generally positioned above a 30i, while a 30i sits above a 20i.

What does i mean?

When used at the end of a conventional model badge, i identifies a petrol model. This should not be confused with BMW i electric models such as i4 or iX.

What does d mean?

d identifies diesel versions such as 320d or 530d.

What does e mean?

On many recent models, e identifies a plug-in hybrid such as 330e or 530e.

What does xDrive mean?

xDrive is BMW's all-wheel-drive branding. When buying a used xDrive car, pay particular attention to tyre dimensions and tread differences.

What does sDrive mean?

sDrive identifies two-wheel drive on selected BMW models. Which axle is driven depends on the vehicle architecture.

What does M340i mean?

M340i is an M Performance 3 Series. It sits above regular 3 Series models but is not the same product as a full BMW M3.

What does M Sport mean?

M Sport is normally an equipment package. It can include sportier styling, wheels, seats, steering wheel and chassis equipment, but it does not transform a normal BMW into a full M model.

Why badges are not enough for parts

Two BMWs carrying the same badge can belong to different generations and use different engines or components. For accurate parts identification, combine the badge with VIN, production date, chassis code and engine code.

BMW naming shortcut

Read a modern BMW badge from left to right: model family → performance tier → powertrain → drivetrain or performance designation.

FAQ

Does BMW 330i mean 3.0 litres?

Is M340i an M3?

No. M340i is an M Performance model; M3 is a full BMW M car.

Is M Sport the same as M Performance?
