BMW xDrive maintenance begins with a component many owners do not think of as drivetrain maintenance at all: the tyres. xDrive continuously coordinates front and rear axle torque, which makes tyre size, pressure, condition and rolling circumference important to the complete system.
The transfer case and differentials also deserve attention, particularly as the vehicle ages or when service history is unknown.

Transfer-case maintenance
The transfer case manages torque distribution between axles. Fluid specification and service procedure depend on the exact unit, so identify the transfer case before buying fluid.
Preventive maintenance cannot reverse mechanical damage. If the car already shudders or binds, use BMW xDrive problems: transfer case, shudder and warning signs.
Front and rear differential maintenance
Differentials contain gears and bearings operating under load. Inspect them for leakage and use the correct fluid when service is performed. Performance models, electronically controlled differentials and standard open differentials may have different requirements.
xDrive and automatic transmission
The transmission and transfer case are separate service areas. Do not call every driveline vibration a gearbox problem.
